World Coolest pix of 2012 week 04

4 Days to go and January 2012 is history. Time flies when your having fun or working hard. Week 4 of 2012 so a bit of everything. Some more Costa Concordia stuff, loads more news on Republican Presidential candidates having a war of words with each other, the one year anniversary of the Egyptian Revolution and let’s not forget the fight against the European equivalent of SOPA called ACTA.

World coolest pix of 2012 week 03

The Costa Concordia. it’s a name we’ll remember for a little while yet. The Italian cruise liner capsizing was the big story in week three of 2012. Note: You might have noticed that there are no sports pix included in this week’s overview, that is because sport has been giving it’s own stage to sign on. Every Monday we’ll review the week in sports that was.

the la grande odyssee sled dog race 2012

The La grande Odyssee sled dog race in France is the most gruelling sled dog race in the world. Mushers and dogs need to cover 1,000km in 11 days, across the Alps. Tough, gruelling and exhausting, but it does make for beautiful pictures.

google vs facebook 40 Photos total

It is rumored that Facebook will float on the New York Stock Exchange this May. The estimated value is between $50-70 billion, for what is essentially a company made by you and me (if you have a Facebook page). It will be the biggest IPO of a tech company ever, surpassing’s Google float from years ago. Both companies are huge and play a big part of our lives, whether we want them to or not. Both are also highly sought after employers and their office environments might have something to do with that. Not your average stuffy offices are they?

World coolest pix of 2012 week 02

Week 2 of a new year is normally the week which brings humanity back to reality. The chores of every day life, good or bad. It’s difficult to pick out any news stories which stand out except the one about the US Marines and the dead Taliban insurgents.

detroit isnt working 43 Photo total

Detroit Motor City is in the spotlights these days. It’s the time of year when the big automakers of the world bring their shiny new cars to the Detroit Auto Show. After some troublesome times the Big Three US car makers have hit on good times again, but the city of Detroit, once world famous for it’s cars and it’s music, is now more famous for the decay of it’s once grand buildings and the high levels of unemployment.

66 Photo World coolest pix of week 51

Christmas is only a few days away and 2012 a little over a week. Week 51 saw the US military finally leave Iraq, a new earthquaske in New Zealand, but the big news was that North Korean’s charismatic and much loved leader Kim Jong-Il passed the freedom torch to his more than capable son when he passed away.

Scenes from Iraq 36 photos total

As 2011 ends, Iraqis confront their challenges with neither the presence of US troops, nor the shadow of Saddam Hussein, who was executed five years ago today. He had ruled since 1979, although he'd been a power player in the government since 1968. The American occupation ended officially on December 15, eight years after the 2003 invasion. Sectarian strife still plagues Iraq, and although the violence lessened from near-civil war levels in 2006, the pullout of American forces has seen a return of hostilities. While the number of American casualties of the occupation stands at 4,487, figures for Iraqi casualties have no such certainty. Some estimates put the figure as high as 100,000. Now conflicts new and old wait to be dealt with by a country free to decide its own fate for the first time in generations. Sectarian struggle, problems with water and electricity delivery, and war-ravaged infrastructure are just a few of the issues facing Iraqis today. Gathered here are recent images of Iraq as it looks ahead to 2012. The last four images are portraits by Reuters photographer Shannon Stapleton, who asked ordinary Iraqis for their thoughts on their future after the pullout of American forces. -- Lane Turner (36 photos total)
