Indonesia also enjoys the a reputation as a budget travel destination that gives its visitors substantial bang for the buck. However, Indonesia is a country that requires some advance arrangements to secure a visa, and it poses certain health hazards to the unprepared.

Health and Safety

Step 1
Update your routine vaccinations, such as measles/mumps/rubella or diphtheria/pertussis/tetanus, as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control. The CDC also recommends shots for hepatitis A and B, as well as typhoid. If you intend to spend time engaged in volcano trekking or other activities that will carry you into the Indonesian backcountry, get a rabies vaccination as well.

Step 2
Request an anti-malarial prescription other than chloroquine from your doctor if you intend to travel to any of the following areas: Kalimantan in Indonesian Borneo, rural Sumatra, Lombok or any of the islands to the east of Lombok. Chloroquine is not effective against Indonesian malaria strains.

Step 3
Buy a deep-woods insect repellent. The CDC recommends one with at least a concentration of DEET of between 30 percent to 50 percent. Insect repellent sprays with DEET concentrations of more than 90 percent are available in the United States, but not in Indonesia, so buy your insect repellent before leaving.

Step 4
Bring a bottle of strong sunblock, rated SPF 30 or higher. The equator runs through
the middle of Indonesia, with the entire country sitting within 10 degrees latitude north and south of it. The sun is very strong and the unprepared are at risk for severe sunburn.

Documents

Step 1
Check the expiration date on your passport. Indonesia follows the general international standard requiring visitors to have at least six-months validity on their passport from the date of entry. If your passport does not meet this requirement, start the renewal process with the U.S. Department of State.

Step 2
Determine the kind of visa you need and if your point of entry into Indonesia has Visa on Arrival (VOA) service. If you only need a 30-day tourist visa and are entering through a major airport such as the one in Bali or Jakarta, you can use the VOA service. Bring your passport, your return air ticket and $25 in cash (2010 rate). Skip all remaining steps in this section.

Step 3
Collect your materials to apply for a visa through the Indonesian Embassy if you require a multiple-entry visa or are entering the country through a point where access to the VOA service is uncertain. For a tourist visa, you need two color passport photos, a completed application form, a copy of your air travel itinerary and your passport.

Step 4
Submit your application to the Indonesian Embassy in Washington, D.C., either in person or by mail, and pay the required fee. Mail-in applications also require a return express mail service envelope that is self-stamped and self-addressed. The fee can be paid by check or money order made to the Embassy of Indonesia, or in cash if the application is submitted in person.
