A glimpse of the MV Discovery Cruises

In 1967, two well known Oslo firms, Messrs. Fearnley & Eger and Øivind Lorentzen commenced talking about a joint cruise venture. A large number of tenders were received from European shipyards and it was Rheinstahl Nordseewerke GmbH of Emden, Germany, who finally got the bid. They had no previous experience in the building of passenger ships, and consequently joined forces with the well known consultants and naval architect firm, Knud E. Hansen of Copenhagen. On the morning of 11 September 2001, the former Island Princess (now mv Platinum) exited the Suez Canal at Port Said, destined for Europe and a $15 million refurbishment.

Talks were also continuing at this time between the owner and Voyages of Discovery, and agreement was eventually reached for the ship to be chartered by the latter, with a view to focusing on a wider choice of destinations and unusual itineraries. The ship was re-christened Discovery on 7th May 2003 by Mrs Jenny Smith, in Harwich. On 10 May 2005 mv Discovery was purchased from Mr Herrod by the parent company of Voyages of Discovery, All Leisure Group PLC nd will continue to operate a year round programme of cruises. This cruise ship had spacious public areas, abundant open deck spaces and promenades of the traditional trans-Atlantic passenger liners. Full autonomy for worldwide cruising with ample capacity to cover long distances without reprovisioning of food, fuel and fresh water. Discover Indonesia and Australia with another experience of traveling by cruise ship, the new way of traveling method.

Fishers and pearl divers working in the area had brought back tales of ferocious lizards with enormous claws, fearsome teeth and forked yellow tongues. One theory holds that the Chinese dragon is based on the Komodo lizard.

Coal

Coal occupies a central position in modern human endeavors. Last year over 7000 megatons were mined worldwide. Powerful, yet dirty and dangerous, use of coal is expanding every year, with 2010 witnessing a production increase of 6.8%. Around 70 countries have recoverable reserves, which some estimates claim will last for over a hundred years at current production levels. Mining for coal is one of the world's most dangerous jobs. While deadliest in China, where thousands of miners die annually, the profession is still hazardous in the West and other regions as well. Our mining and use of coal accounts for a variety of environmental hazards, including the production of more CO2 than any other source. Other concerns include acid rain, groundwater contamination, respiratory issues, and the waste products which contain heavy metals. But our lives as lived today rely heavily on the combustible sedimentary rock. Over 40% of the world's electricity is generated by burning coal, more than from any other source. Chances are that a significant percentage of the electricity you're using to read this blog was generated by burning coal. Gathered here are images of coal extraction, transportation, and the impact on environment and society. The first eight photographs are by Getty photographer Daniel Berehulak, who documented the lives of miners in Jaintia Hills, India. -- Lane Turner (48 photos total)

Top 10 Most Incredible Pieces Of Nanoscale Art

Usually when we think of “art”, things like sculptures or paintings come to mind; in other words, stuff you can hang on the wall or keep in your atrium to be the envy of your neighborhood’s upper crust (everyone is lower-upper class, right?  That’s what TV tells me).
But there is a new form that not only requires skill, it requires science, and likely access to equipment most of us do not have in our homes, or possibly even in our city.

10.  Nano Rose

nanorose
This rose was created by a Taiwanese person named Pai Chun Wei at the National Taiwan University.  It was made using Indium, which I didn’t even know was a thing.  What’s next?  Germanium?  Oh, wait…
Most people have a hard time making fancy roses out of tomato skins, but this rose is mere hundreds of nanometers across; for perspective, a human hair is between 50,000 to 100,000 nanometers across.  I wouldn’t suggest giving these to your significant other in place of real flowers any time soon (unless you are dating a nerd).

How to Choose Hotel Via Internet

You just need to sit in front of your computer and typing the word 'Bali' on a search engine, you will get lots of information online. And now, setting your travel trip was no longer so difficult and complicated as ever. However, you should know that finding a hotel via the internet is more easier to said than actually. One thing you should consider, do not to quickly decided to stay in a hotel just because of the hotel website 'looks good'. There are six things you should consider when decide to choose a hotel via internet:

1. Cleanliness of the hotel
One of the most fundamental factor is, you should look at the cleanliness of the place. Of course this is not an easy question, especially if you, your family or friends have never stayed there. In an effort to convince yourself, you may need to further more to explore the hotel websites and look into the gallery.

2. Interior inside and outside of the hotel room
A few number of hotel founder put up decorations in general it could be as painting, sculpture or plants which are placed in the corners of the hotel and especially in their rooms and posted on the website the hotel. By knowing how the room looks beautiful, you certainly will feel comfortable living in it even though only a few days.

3. Hotel rating
If the website does not display images from the corners of the hotel room, another option you can do is to check the hotel rating system or if you have lots of time, might be able to see comments from clients who have stayed at the hotel. By looking at the evaluation and assessment, these can provide assurance that you are quite comfortable at the hotel. As you might know some travelers tend to have a strong opinion and objective in their assessments.

4. Room Facilities
Another thing that remains to be considered, of course is the amenities of the hotel room, including Air Conditioner (AC), kitchen equipment, refrigerators, heaters, services such as transportation to the airport and speed of Internet access, room service, and free breakfast for two people. Also as a business center, cafeteria and the latter is the availability of swimming pool which is a favorite activities for your children during holiday at the hotel.

5. No smoking room
Not everyone is smoking, may also include you, then it should be ascertained whether there is a room or rooms that provide smoke-free.

6. Rates and prices
After you check everything else , of course the latter is to see and rate per room per night. You certainly do not want to be affected by all the facilities provided by the hotel which lead you out of money just to pay the room.

By many hotels that you found while browsing, choose the hotel with your budget capability. Some hotels sometimes offer different prices during peak and off-peak seasons. So, what are you waiting for? get books to your favorite hotel that suitable for your budget.

Faces in Stone of Mount Rushmore

faces in stone of mount rushmore01
Mount Rushmore in the United States was declared a national monument in 1925. The most interesting fact is that this was declared a national monument even before a construction began in 1927. It is located in south western Dakota in the Black Hills. Faces of U.S. presidents are carved into the rock of these hills. There are figures of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt. President faces are engraved at about 150 meters above the valley, which lies next to the rock, and height of each carved face is about 20 meters. The cost for the whole project was a million dollars, which is a small sum for the cultural value of this monument. An American historian Dan Robinson gave the idea for this monument and the project work was conducted by sculptor Gutzon Borglum, who died in 1941 before the completion of the monument, but his son finished his father’s work. The monument is located near the Borglum studio, which is a sort of mini museum that includes tools used for building a monument.

Hawaiian Volcanoes Alive Forever ?

Mauna Loa is an active volcano in Hawaii. It is located on the western part of Hawaii’s largest island and is one of the largest volcanoes of the world. Almost 50% of the island of Hawaii is composed of cooled lava of volcanoes Mauna Loa and Kilauea. The main crater of the volcano Mauna Loa is located at an altitude of 4170 meters. However, the lava from the volcano appears on the fringes of the mountains, even in the underwater parts of the Hawaiian coast. These two Hawaiian volcanoes are typical of those occurring in underwater volcanic eruptions. Namely, it is considered that the greater part of the island emerged from the lava cooled underwater eruption. Interestingly, the total height of the volcano, measured from its base under the ocean, is 9000 meters.

My name is Jarle Hovda Moe. I’m 23 years old, and I’m working as a photographer in Norway. For the past four years, I’ve lived and studied in the second largest city in Norway, Bergen. It’s also here my passion for photography, and in particular music photography, has bloomed. Until I moved to study, music had always been a huge part of my life. Unfortunately, moving meant leaving that part of my life behind. A couple of years ago, though, I found a new outlet for that energy; music photography. Even though I, myself, prefer “softer” kinds of metal, black metal has become the genre I shoot the most (this being Norway after all). The aesthetics of the genre is really inspiring, the people are great, and I’ve even come to enjoy some of the music.

Harbin International Ice and Snow Festival 2012

The annual Harbin International Ice and Snow Festival has been held since 1963, interrupted for a number of years during the Cultural Revolution until it was resumed in 1985. Harbin is the capital of Heilongjiang province, in northeastern China. It is nicknamed "Ice City" and aptly so for winter January temperatures that average minus 18 degrees Celsius, under the influence of the cold winter wind from Siberia. The festival officially starts January 5th and lasts one month, although exhibits often stay open longer, weather permitting. Harbin is one of the world's four largest ice and snow festivals, along with Japan's Sapporo Snow Festival, Canada's Quebec City Winter Carnival and Norway's Ski Festival. -- Paula Nelson (28 photos total)
